Upper Limb Dysfunction and Common Disease after Lymphedema
Yoon Seung-Hyun
Abstract
Lymphedema is a chronic disease that causes lymphatic dysfunction in the chest and upper limb, and there are reports that it causes neuropathic pain, axillary web syndrome, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff disease, tenosynovitis, cervical radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy, etc. Through literatures review, the author seeks to find out whether lymphedema causes upper limbs dysfunction and whether upper limb disease is commonly caused by lymphedema. In two cross-sectional studies conducted on subjects with lymphedema who underwent breast cancer surgery, lymphedema causes upper limbs dysfunction (increased DASH score, decreased strength and range of motions of upper limbs), so early diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema is important. There have been studies suggesting the possibility that lymphedema may worsen or cause axillary web syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome, but the number of subjects is still small or the study is retrospective, so it is difficult to determine the relationship between lymphedema and axillary web syndrome or carpal tunnel syndrome, and additional research is needed in the future. In addition, there are studies suggesting a relationship between lymphedema and rotator cuff disease (8 cases) and De Quervain's tenosynovitis (2 cases), but it is still at cases report level, so it is difficult to conclude that there is a relationship between lymphedema and diseases.
